"Normal" Laboratory Reference Ranges vs.
Optimal Ranges
Some tests just shouldn’t be graded on a curveHas your doctor told you, "your blood test results
are completely normal," but instead of feeling
relief, you felt worse, knowing that something was
wrong, but the doctor was unable to find any
answers?
Many naturopathic medical doctors and other
functional medicine-oriented doctors question not
the usefulness of conventional blood tests
themselves, but the standard wide "reference ranges"
– the ranges are often so large that they have
little practical value. If you would like to
learn more, here is the rest of the article Dr.
Godby has written:
Some test just shouldn't be graded on a curve.
"Normal" lab reference ranges of standard labs are
designed to identify and diagnose disease states
only, with the goal of fitting 95% of the American
people within the "clinically" normal reference
ranges. As the population becomes sicker, the number
of people who are declared "clinically normal" gets
larger, making the definition of abnormal or disease
states relative.
The question is: Is good enough for you to be
compared to the rest of the sick population and be
judged as "normal' by conventional medicine, or do
you have more lofty goals, like: sleeping well;
being: headache-free, at a healthy weight and body
composition; having: energy to live your life, bowel
regularity, a short term memory, a libido, stable
blood sugar; not craving sugar or being constantly
moody and actually feeling joy? Imagine... !

Important questions about blood
tests:
- When was your last blood test?
- How many items were on that test?
- How long did your doctor spend with you explaining the
results?
- Did your doctor use the standard WIDE reference range -
where almost everybody looks healthy - OR the much
tighter "optimal" range (i.e. Jack LaLanne approach)
with much higher standards, and a much higher
likelihood of finding important clues to help you
with your health?
- Were the blood tests used by your doctor:
a. to help you prevent
disease? b. to help you optimize
your health? c. to educate you about lifestyle
changes that may
be helpful?
- Is your doctor a medical "detective," trying to find the
cause(s) of your dis-ease?
- Is your doctor trained in conventional and
Naturopathic/Functional medicine?
- Did your doctor give you a copy of your blood test and
encourage you to understand some of the key
components of the test?
- Did your doctor order a Vitamin D 25 OH test for
you? What were the ranges: 20-100 or a more optimal
disease-preventing range of 60-80?
- What are your goals - to merely avoid a
disease or to be as healthy and energetic as you can
be?
It is not possible to overemphasize how critical it
is for people to do regular blood tests. I will
never forget the patient who came in for an
appointment shortly after she went blind and into
heart failure from the effects of undiagnosed
diabetes because she had been avoiding doctors for
eight years and didn't know she had diabetes! Not only are CA-licensed naturopathic doctors
primary care doctors medically trained to spot
actual disease processes from blood tests, but they
are also the doctors uniquely qualified to
help YOU PREVENT these diseases and spot the
PATTERNS of emerging disease on the blood tests and
then design a specific program of intervention and
lifestyle changes necessary to help get YOU and YOUR
LOVED ONES to your most energetic self! Is your health and energy important enough to be
evaluated by one of California's natural medicine
and blood chemistry experts?

The Foods You Eat May Be The Cause Of Your Health
Problems
Conventional Medicine typically does not test for
hidden or delayed food allergies
(IgG reactions) but only looks at immediate (IgE
reactions) such as hives, itching, anaphalyctic
shock, etc. Hidden and delayed food allergies have
many and varied symptoms that affect every system of
the body. Symptoms can manifest as anxiety,
depression, headaches, rashes, GI upset (gas,
bloating, constipation), acne, fatigue, and weight
gain. Dr. Godby has seen hundreds of his patients
improve dramatically after avoiding the foods to
which they are allergic. Many people don't
realize they are walking around with hidden and
delayed food allergies that wreak havoc on their
bodies!

Hormones are key to living a balanced life. They are the
messengers that tell our body how to operate on a
cellular level. Everything from growth, food
metabolism and sexual function are governed by our
hormones. They affect how we feel and our
quality of life enormously. For more
information about how imporant our hormones are,
here are two articles written by Dr. Godby:
Hormones Key to Dropping Excess Weight and
Andropause: Male Menopause.
Dr. Godby prefers salivary hormone testing over
blood tests because saliva shows the more
bioavailable unbound
hormone level more accurately.
We can test
for:
-
Cortisol
-
DHEA
-
Estradiol, Estron, Estriol
-
Progesterone, FSH, LH
-
Testosterone, Androstenedione
-
DHT
-
Insulin
-
Total Secretory IgA
-
And others!

The
human body’s communication system is an extremely
intricate system of “messengers.” Our
neurotransmitters are one of the types of messengers
that can be affected by stress, pharmaceutical
drugs, recreational drugs, trauma, or diet. When our
neurotransmitters are out of balance, we may
experience anxiety, nervousness, tension,
depression, or many other mood disorders. For
more information, read Dr. Godby's article:
It's Winter, Are Your Neurotransmitters Up to Par?
We test for:
-
Serotonin
-
GABA
-
Glutamate
-
Dopamine
-
Norepinephrine
-
Epinephrine (Adrenaline)

The Newest Generation Thyroflex: "The
Most Effective Way to Test the Thyroid" is here. The
only ThyroFlex in the Sacramento Area!
The thyroid's role is to maintain the body's
regulatory functions thus affecting our bodies at
the cellular level. Cellular energy decline is
inevitable due to the aging process, stress, and
environmental toxins happening daily in our lives.
Thyroid dysfunction can negatively affect the
neurological, heart, skeletal muscle, kidneys, and
hormone-producing tissues in our bodies.
Research has documented that 80% of the population
has some level of thyroid dysfunction; therefore,
thyroid function screening test is very important
for everyone. The standard blood test used to check
for proper thyroid function is a good tool to
establish a baseline thyroid function, but it can be
painful, costly and often be misleading in cases of
ongoing treatment of patients with sub-clinical
hypothyroidism.
The Thyroflex offers a pain-free and cost effective
way of measuring the thyroid function with a simple
reflex test. Our patented Thyroflex technology is
currently the only non-invasive tool available to
measure thyroid function at its cellular level with
a very high accuracy.
We can give you quick, fast, and simple results
in our office today. Call to schedule a 30 minute appointment.

The
BioMeridian (BIM), registered with the FDA as a
class II medical device, measures the balance of all
body systems. It is a non-invasive test that
measures electrical conductivity at the meridian
points on the hands and feet. It measures are
following body systems:
- Skin
- Nervous system
- Locomotor
- Respiratory
- Cardiovascular
- Digestive system
- Pancreas
- Liver and gall bladder
- Urogenital
- Blood
- Lymph (our drainage system)
- Metabolism
- Endocrine
- Immune system
With that powerful
information, the BIM assessment software will assist
Dr. Godby in effectively formulating a comprehensive
support program that includes detailed
recommendations for an optimal supplementation
regimen customized to your specific needs. BIM
devices have been consistently used in medicine to
non-invasively obtain important health information.
Some of the more recognizable devices include EKGs
and EEGs used to measure heart and brain function.
There is substantial scientific information
supporting BIM
testing.
A standard BIM assessment can be completed in about
30 minutes. Test results are color-coded in an
easy-to-understand take home report containing Dr.
Godby's specific recommendations. With these
reports, progress can be tracked easily - visit to
visit.
Test preparations:
- Conta-indicated if patient has a pacemaker.
- Patient must not have participated in
physical activities (sports, exercise,
cardio/weight training) in the last 4 hours.
- Eat only a light meal 2 hours prior to
testing

BioMeridian
site.

Health and well-being are closely tied to the
health of the body's fat free mass and body cell
mass compartments. By focusing attention on these
essential compartments, therapeutic strategies are
more effective because important results can be
measured objectively.
The Body Scan Analyzer provides a direct readout of
the impedance of the human body, and estimates of
fat mass, fat-free mass (lean body mass), body cell
mass, extracellular mass, total body water,
intracellular water, and extracellular water.
For more information, read
the
Fact Sheet.
Test preparations:
-
No alcohol within 24 hours
-
No exercise for 4 hours
-
Avoid caffeine or food for 4
hours
-
Make sure to consume 14-24
ounces of water within 2 hours
